35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Dasyuromorpha; Family: Dasyuridae; Genus: Sarcophilus; Genus species: Sarcophilus harrisii. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 57-65 cm; Weight: 7-9 kg; Identification: The Tasmanian devil has black fur with white marks on the chest and rump; Habitat: All major habitats; Diet: Carnivore: insects, fish, birds, small mammals; Reproduction: Tasmanian devils mate in March, with births taking place in April. Even though the female will produce 40 eggs per ovulation, only four young are born. The baby Tasmanian devils remain in their mother's pouch until August and remain with her until the following January. The expected lifespan for Tasmanian devils is six years; Social Structure: Tasmanian devils are usually solitary but may gather in groups at large carcasses; Behavior: Tasmanian devils are nocturnal, non-territorial, and can be very shy; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Despite the fearful name, Tasmanian devils are said to make excellent pets when hand-reared and treated gently.
