Description

Aerial port side view of the American tanker Esso Balboa. Note the 12.7 cm gun on the stern and light AA weapons abreast the funnel and on the forecastle.

The Panama Transport Company tanker Esso Balboa was one of two vessels (Hulls 224 and 225) under construction at the Deutsche Werft AG at Hamburg, Germany, when war broke out in Europe on 1 September 1939. The Esso Balboa was delivered on 31 October 1939 and moved to Copenhagen, Denmark, on 2 November 1939. There she was taken in charge by the first of a series of Danish crews, who manned her throughout the war and sailed to the U.S. The Esso Balboa made her first trip to the Pacific war zone when she sailed from Aruba on 30 April 1942 with Navy special fuel oil for Australia. She completed twelve voyages carrying oil from central and South America to Australia and other South Pacific destinations during the war. In March 1950, she was purchased by Standard Française des Pétroles, Le Havre, and renamed Esso Gascogne. The ship was finally scrapped at Alicante, Spain, in 1964.
