Description

On a clear night in the high Sierra two friends set out on a lake a mile above sea level to watch the stars. They found the universe gazing back at them. I was lucky to grab this image of a great friend of mine gazing at the Milky Way. I think we both were awestruck by the grandiose beauty of the scene unfolding before us as the center of the galaxy glistened above, reflections of twinkling stars danced along the surface of Gerle Creek reservoir. We were deep in the Crystal Basin Recreation area of California's El Dorado National Forest about an hour from civilization and nestled in a basin of mountains shielding the sky from oppressive light pollution. The orange glow along the horizon is light from Sacramento 50 miles+ to the south west. It was so dark the stars were the only light source besides headlamps, and flashlights lol. I was so happy to make this image and astounded by the shear beauty of nature but most important was the moment captured in this scene. I wanted to show the beauty of that moment someone sees the night sky in its grandeur and time stops as they gaze the heavens above.
