Taşkışla, to the left, was designed by British Architect William James Smith and built between 1846 and 1852. Mete Avenue is in the background and the high wall enclosing the “Tennis, Fencing and Mountaineering Club” (TED) is seen on the right. TED was founded in 1933, on the initiative of İstanbul Governor Muhittin Üstündağ, with the name “Mountaineering, Walking and Winter Sports Club.” The institution took its current name in 1936, following a proposal by the Mayor of İstanbul, Lütfi Kırdar, who was also a member of the club. Kırdar reserved an area for the club in Park No. 2 of the Henri Prost plan. The building was designed by the architects Rükneddin Güney and Fazıl Aysu. It opened in 1943. Located on the green, it had six tennis courts and provided space for fencing and mountaineering. The plan and the facade had a modernist design, but certain details referenced characteristics of Traditional Turkish Houses. When Bedrettin Dalan became mayor of İstanbul TED was moved to another location in the city. In 1987 the building and the tennis courts were razed down. The massive Hyatt Regency Hotel opened in its place in 1993. This photograph was taken in the 1940s and is witness to a melee between a police officer and two civilians. İngiliz mimar William James Smith tarafından tasarlanan ve 1846-1852 yıllarında inşa edilen Taşkışla binasının önünde çekilmiş fotoğraf (soldaki), Mete Caddesi istikametinin 1940’ların sonundaki durumunu gösteriyor. Polisle kavga eden iki kişinin görüntülendiği fotoğrafın sağındaki yüksek duvar, Tenis Eskrim Dağcılık Kulübü’ne (TED) ait. Dönemin İstanbul valisi Muhittin Üstündağ’ın girişimiyle 1933’te “Dağcılık, Yürüyüşçülük ve Kış Sporları Kulübü” adıyla kurulan TED, 1936’da, üyelerinden biri olan Lütfi Kırdar’ın girişimiyle bugünkü adını aldı. Yine Kırdar tarafından kulübe, Henri Prost’un tasarladığı nazım planı dâhilindeki 2 no’lu park alanı içinde arazi tahsis edildi.
