Description

Downtown, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Alderney Marina in the foreground, the Angus L. MacDonald Bridge and the North End of Halifax in the background. Both before and after its near-total destruction by the Halifax Explosion of 1917, the North End's enduring reputation has been as a blue-collar, economically depressed section of the city plagued by crime and other social problems. It was also the site of Africville, the century-old African-Canadian community north of here, on the shore of Bedford Basin, that was completely obliterated by the city government in the 1960s for the construction of the A. Murray MacKay Bridge in a controversial and, some say, racist move that inspired a belated apology several decades later. Recently, the North End's low rents have made it attractive to artists and university students, kicking off gentrification in certain parts of the neighbourhood.

Centro, Dartmouth, Nueva Escocia.
