Description

Shelburne County Museum, Shelburne, Nova Scotia. Artifacts from Loyalist settlers of Shelburne. In the late 18th Century, the influx into Canada of thousands of "United Empire Loyalists" (former residents of the American colonies who remained loyal to the British king during the Revolution) briefly made Shelburne the largest city on the North American continent. However, the region's geographic isolation and poor soil quickly drove most of the newcomers away, and within a few decades Shelburne was a sleepy fishing and shipbuilding port again.
