Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Pictured is a Royal Navy Merlin Helicopter during a TIESI course in the UK.

For this Troop Insertion and Extraction Systems Instructor (TIESI) course JHC (Joint Helicopter Command) provided three airframes, the Royal Air Force Chinook of RAF Odiham, a British Army, 1st Aviation Brigade flown Wildcat from Yeovilton and a Royal Navy, Fleet Air Arm Merlin, again from RNAS Yeovilton.

After landing the helicopters landed, the JADTEU (Joint Air Delivery Test and Evaluation Unit) Training team, along with the aircraft loadmasters, ran through the different ground training briefs before lifting and completing multiple serials, including abseiling from the ramp on a Chinook, through to fast-roping from the side of the Wildcat and the Merlin

Merlin Mk2 entered service in 2014 as an upgrade for the original 1990’s Mk1 naval version. Its role is supply the UK’s Maritime Force Protection and airborne anti-submarine warfare capability for the foreseeable future.

Beyond searching for submarines the helicopter is capable of much more, including round-the-clock maritime patrol and interdiction – armed with Sting-Ray Torpedoes, Mk11 Depth Charges and the M3m .50 Calibre Machine Gun; troop ferrying, casualty evacuation, medium lift under-slung loads, Search and Rescue, and other contingency tasks.
