Summary

[edit]
Description

Artist: Rowan Gillespie, a renowned Irish sculptor. Sponsor: Norma Smurfit, philanthropist and patron of the arts. Location: Custom House Quay, Dublin Docklands. This site is historically significant as a departure point for many Irish emigrants fleeing the Great Famine.

Description: The installation features a series of hauntingly emaciated bronze figures in ragged clothing. They appear to be trudging along the riverbank, accompanied by a solitary, starving dog. The sculptures symbolise the desperation and exodus of the Irish people during the devastating famine of 1845-1849.
