English: "CHOWPAUL. "The preceding number was taken up with wheel carriages; in this we shall treat of those which are carried, and known under the general name of palanquins. "Of these the Chowpaul is the most ancient, and, as it were, the original from which all the other forms of palanquins may be traced: on this account it is used in all great ceremonies, marriages, processions, etc. The Chowpaul is simply a very light bed or sopha, over which a large bambou forms an arch. But as this is not a sufficient defence against the sun, it is always attended by a servant carrying a chata or parasol. I have been careful to represent with this palanquin its appropriate class of bearers and the dwelling of those who are in the habit of using it; which attention shall be continued through all the prints of this number." |
