Title
Swivel fitting
Description
English: Copper alloy swivel fitting dating to the 12th century. The fitting probably functions as a harness fitting. Several of these swivels have been found and dated to the 12th century. The fitting has a roughly circular loop with a circular section. This is moulded on one side, either side of a flat bezel type area. Throught the loop (between the decorative moulding) there is a circular perforation. The fitting may have been fixed to another part which allowed it to swivel freely. The fitting weighs 10.08g and measures 24.03mm in length, 25.67mm in width and 7.88mm in thickness. A similar example of a swivel fitting dated to the 11th century can be seen in Brian Reads 'Metal Artefacts of Antiquity' page 62, No.484. The function of the cited example is not certain but a dog leash fitting has been suggested.
