Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Susannah Roe followed her husband James Elphinstone Roe to Australia when he was transported. Both of them worked there as schoolteachers, Susannah providing a steadier income than James, whom school boards would not always employ, both because of his conviction and because he was an outspoken advocate of school reform. She taught at schools in York, Geraldton, and Greenough (Western Australia) between 1864 and 1873. This photograph is of unknown date.

[edit]
This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This image is in the public domain in countries and areas where the copyright term for anonymous or pseudonymous works is 70 years from the year of first publication or less, for example in the European Union.

Please give also an explanation why the work is in the public domain in its source country and in the United States. If this work was published after 1928 and it was not in the public domain in its source country on the URAA date (January 1, 1996 for most countries), use {{Not-PD-US-URAA}} in addition to this template. For files in the public domain in the EU, please use {{PD-anon-70-EU}} (see the documentation).

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
