boys withupraised hands in the tub; with what remains of the tallfigure of St. Nicholas in episcopal vestments and mitre. In the scene of the Three Dead and the Three Living, adetail that does not even appear in the engraving publishedsixty-two years ago, is the hawk-on-wrist in the figures oftwo of the Kings. In both, cases there is a glove of fourfingers in one and a thumb. It may be worth while here to record that there, is apainting of this subject, of about the same late thirteenth-century date, in the north aisle of Hurstbourne TarrantChurch, in which the three yellow skeletons and the figuresof the Kings bear so close a resemblance that it is notimprobable the same artist executed both paintings. Itshould also be stated that these two examples, with theslightly later one in the north aisle of Lutterworth Church,Leicestershire, which I preserved and copied in 1914, arethe oldest remaining of this subject in England. At Lutter-worth the hawk-on-wrist detail also appears. PLATE II

face p. 70 ST. LEONARDS, PRESTON (BANSTEAD). BY SIR H. C. M. LAMBERT, K.C.M.G., C.B. THE Ordnance Survey of Banstead shows the site ofSt Leonards Chapel in the north-east corner of ChapelGrove, not far from a field called Preston Hawe (where aresome earthworks figured in the Victoria History of Surrey,Vol. IV, p. 400, and believed by Manning and Bray to bethe site of the Manor House of Preston). This Chapel wasin the Manor of Preston, and Manning and Bray say thattraces of the Chapel still remained in 1809, but that thegreater part of the foundations had been made use of someyears before in building a barn. According to Edwards(1801), many human bones were found in the south-westcorner of Preston Wood when workmen were digging earththere (p. 249 of my History of Banstead). The site of theChapel is in fact easy to identify, as it is higher than thesurrounding ground, and I have recently been allowed todig and examine it. Only foundations remain, and theseare not easy to trace accuratel
