ted outin another part of this work, divided bloodvessels of the abdominalcavity possess a remarkable tendency to bleed when shut oflF from theclotting influence of the air, and while there are some mechanicaldevices (spaying scissors, spaying emasculators) on the market bywhose action the vessels are crushed, it is infinitely safer to ligateand thereby reduce all risk of secondary hemorrhage to a minimum. It is extremely important to apply ligatures so that all ovarial tissuewill be completely occluded. If any portion of the gland is leftbehind, the object of the operation, when suppression of estruationis aimed at, will be defeated. All tissue within the occluded area isnext excised with scissors, the division being made at the upperextremity first. The one ovary being thus removed, the operatorfollows the cornu back to its junction with its fellow, and follows No. 52. Some operators believe the uterus may be more easily dis-tinguished by first introducing a probe, catheter, or sound into thefundus of the organ by way of the vagina. This is an amateurishmethod and hinders rather than expedites the operation. According to Mueller, it is the practice among some Germanveterinarians to secure sterility by applying two ligatures to theuterus and then completely severing the organ between them. Itis hardly necessary to state that this sort of operation should neverbe countenanced, for not only has it no effect whatever in prevent-ing estruation and the desire for sexual intercourse, but it at onceestablishes a pat
