Summary
[edit]DescriptionSurf and ships at Nome EA Hegg.jpg |
English: Captioned "Surf at Nome". At least 6 ships are visible in the roadstead, and probably at least two lighters (barges used for unloading since the very shallow slope of the beach prevented ships from approaching the shore at Nome). The lighters could be pulled up to the beach with a cable system or unloaded with an overhead cable tram. The group in the center of the photograph may be a tugboat (with smokestack), ship (with masts) and lighter, near the outer end tower (triangular) that supported the tram cables. |
