Summary
[edit]DescriptionSunshine and ice - geograph.org.uk - 891641.jpg |
English: Sunshine and ice A break in the cloud cover over the Brecon Beacons allowed a patch of bright illumination to sweep across the hillside. The narrowest section of ridge (in the sunlight) boasts no cliffs whereas the section which is backed by a wide expanse of plateau moorland (nearer the camera) is decorated with a short cliff. The fact that there is a (barely discernible) moraine beneath the latter gives the game away. During the last Ice Age, snow falling on the plateau, then drifted eastwards accumulating in the lee of the plateau, eventually forming a small glacier. Insufficient snow was available at the narrow section hence no eroding glacier and hence no cliffs there. |
