Summary
[edit]DescriptionSummit of the Hill of Standing Stones - geograph.org.uk - 1153598.jpg |
English: Summit of the Hill of Standing Stones. This is a view eastward towards the summit area. The evocative name "Hill of Standing Stones" is much older than the cairn that stands on the hilltop. The various possible explanation of the name are discussed here: 992573.
The presence of the modern cairn can distract attention from what appear to be larger boulders located around the hill-top area, on all sides; a few of these appear in this photograph, their tops visible above the snow, but there are many others. However, these "boulders" are evidently no more than outcrops of the underlying bedrock: http://www.wosas.net/wosas_site.php?id=7982 |
