Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Telkupi, situated on the southern banks of the Damodar near Panchet was famous once as Tailakampa, the ancient capital and riverine port of Shikharbhum and an important Jain centre of commerce and religion. First described by Joseph.D. Beglar in his Report of a tour through the Bengal Provinces...in 1872-73 and later by Dr Debala Mitra and others, the area contained more than 20 temples and mounds. In the mid 1950s, the area was inundated following the construction of the Panchet Dam and what we see today are a couple of deuls half submerged in the vast Panchet reservoir. Locals say that another peeps up during low water levels. The temples have been dated to 10th-12th century AD. A number of Jain artefacts have been recovered from the area.
