On 10 July 1992 the 159th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment flew out of Stargard, which is 30 km south east of Szczecin (Poland). Every enthusiast that turned up at the gate that morning was let in for the occasion. With some friends I drove all evening and night (900 kms) to arrive there before sunrise. And after all the 39 fighters had left, we drove 900 kms back. We were young and reckless. But it was worth it. Nothing was impossible that day: walking between the Flankers, even climbing on top of one or into a cockpit. The Su-27s went to Petrozavodsk which is to the north east of St Petersburg. They still operate from there. |
