Description |
English: Even after the opening of law schools in the late 19th century, it was possible to become a lawyer by studying and working with a practicing lawyer. This was known as "reading law." It wasn't until 1880 that the University of Washington offered a lecture series on legal issues. The University's School of Law opened in 1899.
In this 1909 photo, Ray Gruhlki (right) and a friend study law in their room at the Seattle YMCA. Gruhlki was also a photographer, and some of the photos that decorate the room may be his.
