The result of this trial was the peaceful establish-ment of Christianity in Corinth, where, though securefrom the violence of the Jews, it was, however, con-stantly exposed by its situation to the intrusion ofnew comers, with different modifications of Christianopinions. Thus eventful was the second journey ofPaul. In many of the most flourishing and populouscities of Greece communities were formed, whichwere continually enlarging their sphere. The third journey, starting from the head-quarters ofChristianity, Antioch, led Paul again through the sameregions of Asia, Galatia, and Phrygia. But insteadof crossing over into Macedonia, he proceeded alongthe west of Asia Minor to the important city of Eph-esus. PAUL AT EPHESUS. EARLY CHRISTIANS. 37 celebrated temple was one of the most splendid modelsof Grecian architecture; the image of the goddessretained the symbolic form of the old Eastern na-ture-worship. It was one of the great schools ofmagic. Paul resided in Ephesus two years, duringwhich the rapid extension of Christianity was accel-erated by many wonderful cures. He preached atfirst in the synagogue; but this being productive ofmuch wrangling, he established an independent Chris-tian church. He also preached in the neighboringcities as well as at Ephesus; and all the country ofAsia, properly so called, was thereby furnished withan opportunity of becoming well acquainted with theprinciples of the Christian religion. He wroughtmany wonderful cures ; even when the handkerchiefsand aprons of the sick were brought to him, theywere healed of their diseases, and some of the personsrelieved by him were demoniacs.
