English: A poster claiming "Luther served as a model for the Nazis" in the streets of Halle an der Saale in 2020. Prominent figures from Halle, such as Georg Friedrich Händel, Martin Luther, and August Hermann Francke, were celebrated, but new banners in the city highlighted their darker legacies. Händel is noted for profiting from the slave trade, Francke for advocating child violence, and Luther's antisemitism is linked to Nazi ideology, citing his recommendations for burning synagogues and forcing Jews into labor. The banners proposed honoring alternative figures like Dorothea Erxleben, the first German woman with a doctorate in medicine, and Anton Wilhelm Amo, the first known African philosopher in Germany, both of whom studied in Halle.
