English: Typical N7 class 0-6-2T at its home, Stratford Locomotive Depot. View southward, outside the Jubilee Shed; ex-Great Eastern major Locomotive Depot in London. N7/5 No. 69658 was one of the over 100 0-6-2T's that were the mainstay of the motive power for the many suburban services from Liverpool Street Station before electrification. Although some services were electrified in the late 1940's, Stratford Depot (coded 30A in BR's Eastern Region) was by far the largest in Britain, having in 1954 an allocation (including its various suburban sub-Sheds) of 411 (396 steam), comprising:- 64 4-6-0, 23 2-6-0 (5 BR), 65 0-6-0, 2 4-4-2T, 21 2-6-4T, 20 2-4-2T, 105 0-6-2T, 70 0-6-0T, 4 0-4-0T, 13 BR 4-6-2, 1 BR 2-10-0 and 8 ex-LMS 4-4-2T, also 12 0-6-0 Diesel Electric, 2 Petrol 0-4-0 and 1 Bo-Bo Electric; about 100 of the above were normally housed at sub-Sheds. By 1961, when I photographed 69658, the allocation was substantially less, with many main-line Diesels. |
