48 Persons and Places in Europe. the floor of mud with a small platform around the sides to sit or sleepupon. A pile of stones serves for a stove, and a hole in the top of the hutfor a chimney. A pot to stew their meat in and a few wooden bowls and hornspoons are about all the furniture or utensils they own. The walls are fre-quently decorated with bladders of deers milk and muffin-shaped cheeses. The prettiest article in a Lapps tent is the tiny cradle for the baby. It isoften covered on the outside with green baize cloth ornamented with brightscarlet binding. The little bed inside is made of fine moss, as soft as velvet,1,and covered with a little quilt of hares skin. A string is fastened aroundit so that at night it can be hung up on a peg, or when the parents aretraveling, across the mothers back.
