MARKET DAY WITH FATHER One afternoon Kit and Kat were playingaround the kitchen doorstep, while theirMother sat on a bench by the door, peelingsome onions for supper. It was not yet supper-time, but Vrouw Vedder was always ahead ofthe clock with the work. Kit and Kat had a pan of water and wereteaching their ducklings to swim. They eachhad one little fat duckling of their very own.The ducklings squawked when Kit lifted themover the edge of the pan into the water. Dont do that, Kit, said Kat. Theducklings dont like it. You did nt like itwhen you fell into the water, did you? But Im not a duck, said Kit. Well, anyway, theyre tired and want togo to their mother, said Kat. Lets dosomething else! Ill tell you what! Lets goout to the garden and help Father get the boatloaded for market. 280 KIT AND KAT

They found their father cutting cabbagesand gathering them into piles. He was stop-ping to light his pipe, when they reachedhim. O Father! said Kit and Kat both to-gether. May we go on the boat to marketwith you to-morrow morning? Mother saidwe might ask! Father Vedder blew two puffs from his pipewithout answering. Well help you load the boat, said Kit. Yes, said Kat, I can carry a cabbage. I can carry two, said Kit. Well bothbe good, said Kat. Very well, said Father, at last. Wellsee how you work! And to-morrow morning,if its fair, Ill see! But you must go to bedearly to-night, because you 11 have to get upvery early in the morning, if you go with me!No
