vere avuto a maestio Demofìlo d'Imera, ecc., e lo fanno figlio dell'Eraclea

Sull' origine di Metaponto corsero favole molte che la
fecero fondare da Epeo, dai Pilli venuti da Troia con
Nestore, da Daulio tiranno di Crissa e da altri. Si parla
anche di Caonii, di Etoli, di Corintii e Beozi, e di una
colonia di Achei venuti a ripopolarla più tardi. Il suon
ome più antico fu Aliba ricordato da Omero, e fu chia-
mata anclie Metabo, come apparisce dagli scrittori e dalle
monete 1. È certo che presto fatta prospera e forte tenne
luogo cospicuo tra le altre Repubbliche, mandò a Delfo
e ad Olimpia ricchissimi doni doro e di statue 2, fu
splendida di pubblici edifizi e di templi fra cui uno all
eMuse, ultimo asilo a Pitagora 3, e un altro a Cerere
protettrice dei fecondissimi campi, della quale si vede
l'imagine nelle medaglie bellissime adorne di floride
spighe.
Dopo il lìume Cradano veniva la regione Tarentina
confinante a tramontana e a levante colla Peucezia e
