Summary
[edit]DescriptionStore, accommodations etc.- the actual worship used to be around that round stone (37074480186).jpg | The 4-pillar Atashgah fire temple is just to the left of me- you can see the shadow of it in the foreground. The actual prayers etc. wer held around this round altar- you can see there is a fire on it too. Although the actual 4-pillar temple is fairly small, you can see that it's grounds were fairly large, as they had accommodations, store rooms etc. The history of the Temple is long and chequered. From times immemorial this was the holy place of Zoroastrians – fire worshippers (approximately beginning of our era). They attributed mystical significance to the inextinguishable fire and came there to worship the relic. Hindus soon joined as well, as they too worship fire. After the introduction of Islam, the Zoroastrian temple was destroyed. Many Zoroastrians fled to India and continued their worship there. But in the 15th -17th centuries the Hindu-fire worshippers who came to Absheron with the trading caravans on the Silk Road began to make pilgrimages to Surakhany. The Indian merchants started erection of the temple. The earliest temple part dates to 1713. The latest – the central temple-altar was built with the support of merchant Kanchangar in 1810. During the 18th century chapels, cells, and a caravanserai (pit/ rest stop or motel for caravans) were added to the central part of the temple. One can find carved inscriptions in Indian lettering there. (Gobustan, Azerbaijan, Sept. 2017) |
