Summary
[edit]DescriptionStogumber railway station platform - geograph.org.uk - 1770578.jpg |
English: Stogumber railway station platform Looking towards the north west along the single platform at Stogumber railway station. Actually located in Kingswood, it is named after the village which is about a mile away. The name Stogumber is an amalgamation of the surname Gunner with Old English 'stoc' (stoke), which originally meant simply 'place', but later gained more specific meanings, such as 'dairy farm', 'summer pasture', 'crossing place', 'meeting place' and 'place of worship'.
The station was opened by the West Somerset Railway in 1862 and closed by British Rail in 1971. It was reopened in 1978 by the present day West Somerset Railway, a privately-owned preserved line. |
