Description
English: This mill was constructed in 1868 by John P. Cable, a nephew of Peter Cable. John Cable used the water power from Mill Creek, but he also dug a connecting channel to Forge Creek so that he could tap both streams especially when the water levels were low. Cable built an elaborate water gate flume system to regulate the flow of the water. Back in the 19th century, the mill's water wheel had to be swapped out every 7-10 years since the water wheel would eventually wear out and begin to rot. This mill wheel is called an overshot wheel because the water flows over the top of the wheel. Between the 1850s and 1870s, when Cades Cove's population was at its peak, four or five mills served about 700 residents.
