D.t. 34–37 cm. Gnezdi se u većem delu Evrope, severne i centralne Azije, na delovima Bliskog Istoka i Male Azije i u delu severne Amerike. Selica je. Zimu provodi uz obale Afrike, Kariba, Južne Amerike, južne Azije i Australazije. U periodu gnežđenja, staništa su joj reke, jezera, bare, estuari, lagune, priobalne močvare, morske obale ili sprudovi. van perioda gnežđenja uglavnom se zadržava uz morske obale, zalive, lagune i druga priobalna staništa. Gnezdi se kolonijalno, najčešće na muljevitim, peščanim ili kamenitim ostrvcima sa oskudnom vegetacijom. hrani se pretežno sitnom ribom i vodenim beskičmenjacima (insekti, račići). Evropska populacija je stabilna. U Srbiji je malobrojna gnezdarica sa promenljivim trendom populacije koja se procenjene na 150–200 parova (Puzović et al 2003).
