| Description |
English: Steps with a story At the northern end of Bailgate is a terrace of 6 houses https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/301719 built 1777-8. In the late 18th / early 19th century, coaches were having difficulty passing under Newport Arch https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/173894 without injuring passengers on top, so the road level was lowered so the houses at this end of Bailgate then required steps to reach their front doors. |
