Steinunn Sigurdardóttir studierte Psychologie und Philosophie am University College in Dublin und hat viele Jahre für das isländische Radio und Fernsehen gearbeitet. Mit ihrem ersten Gedichtband „Sífellur“ veröffentlichte sie im Alter von 19 Jahren. 1995 erhielt sie den Isländischen Literaturpreis. International wurde sie durch ihre Romane „Der Zeitdieb“ und „Herzort“ bekannt. Ihr Bestseller „Der Zeitdieb“ wurde mit Emmanuelle Béart und Sandrine Bonnaire in den Hauptrollen in Frankreich verfilmt.
