Description

AFTER LOCATING an outcropping of soapstone such as this one, Santa Catalina's early islanders set to work transforming it into household products that were traded region-wide. First, an appropriate section of stone was selected, and then the surrounding area chipped away, leaving a spherical bulb. The bulb was then undercut until all that remained was a stem connecting the bulbous from to the rock. Finally the bulb was cut or pried free. With tools of harder stone, the inside of the bowl was carved out, smoothed and made ready for use. Sometimes these goods were decorated with delicate carvings of geometric and abstract designs or inlayed with shell fragments.

Soapstone effigies were made into many forms such as whales, birds, fish, mammals and canoes. Some of these items were used in religious ceremonies and rituals.

HERE, on this steatite outcropping, the island's former residents left evidence of their creativity, craftsmanship, and culture. The Tongva may have used this particular quarry for thousands of years, enriching their material and spiritual lives.*

The sign goes on to request that visitors respect this special place and not to touch or deface the quarry in any way.
