Description

This is the Tantalus Creek discharge graph at Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone, Wyoming. The spike on the chart is an increase in stream water volume from a Steamboat Geyser major eruption. It erupted starting at 4:47 PM on 10 April 2020. Reported lag times between Steamboat eruptions and discharge spikes at the Tantalus Creek recording station range from less than an hour to about 1.5 hours.

Steamboat is the world's tallest geyser - the highest water reaches over 400 feet above the vent area. Its eruptions are normally unpredictable - it can go years or even decades without erupting. Steamboat entered an exciting active phase in spring 2018. It had 80 major eruptions from then to the end of 2019. This is the 11th eruption of 2020 and the 91st eruption of the series. Intervals (= eruption start to eruption start) in days for 2020 have been: 13.9, 13.9, 9.1, 10.8, 8.3, 7.9, 6.8, 9.0, 9.05, 8.3, and 8.5.
