RK Council Learns Park-SqCeremony Omitted Sends Members to Pay UsualTribute at Statue Informed late yesterdays afternoonthat, contrary to the usual custom, nowreath had been placed on the statueof Abraham Lincoln in Park sq onthe anniversary of his birth, the CityCouncil passed an order that mem-bers of the body purchase a wreathat their own expense and place it onthe statue. Pres Dowd named a committee toperform the act of tribute. Headedby Councilor Clement A. Norton,John E. Kerrigan, Richard D. Glea-son, George W. Roberts and GeorgeP. Donovan purchased a wreath and,after darkness had fallen, placed iton the monument. Others present at the ceremonywere Commander John H. Fahey ofthe Army and Navy Union, City Mes-senger Edward Leary and his two as-sistants, Roy Green and Thomas Mac-Mahon. Darkness had fallenwhen, at long last, a wreath was placed againstthe Lincoln statue in Park Square. The mayor had apparently been told thatmunicipal ceremony on Lincolns birthday wasnot customary. At least, the records in City Hallcould throw no light on the subject. But theCity Council remembered otherwise. Subscrip-tions were hastily obtained, a wreath was hastilyacquired, a delegation was hastily chosen, anorator was hastily enlisted. Then, as dusk de-scended, a handful of city officials hastily leftCity Hall for the statue. The oration remainedun-orated, for there was no audience.
