Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Boncompagni Ludovisi Collection.

Pentelic marble, Carrara marble for the restoration.

The sculpture portrays the god of war as nude, with well-developed muscles, seated on a rock in a resting position - an iconographical reference to the Phidian frieze from the Parthenon. The god holds a sword in his left hand, while at his feet a little Eros plays between Ares and Aphrodite. The work's discovery in the Campitelli district of Rome led to some scholars to suppose a link between the Ludovisi Ares ad the statue of the seated Mars from the temple sacred to this god at the Circus Flaminius, which alos housed a statue of Venus; the statue of the seated Mars was described by Pliny as a work of the Greek sculptor Skopas Minor from the end of the 2nd Century BC. This is currently the most widely accepted dating.

In 1622 the sculpture was restored by Gian Lorenzo Bernini; the head of the Eros, the right foot of the Ares, and the hilt of the sword, inspired by the Great Ludovisi Sarcophagus, are restorations in Carrara marble, made to look different from the original marble.
