Description

William Gilbert Rees 1827-1898

Explorer, runholder and first European Settler.

"I saw an open country, not perfectly level, but broken by small hill and terraces, whilst a large lake or arm of a lake stretched away in the distance almost as far as the eye could reach"

Founder of Queenstown who with his wife Frances settled near this point in 1861 and built the first building by the lake. When gold was discovered in 1862 Ree was paid compensation of 10,000 pounds for the part of his farm that included Queenstown and he moved to Kawarua Falls.

I had to be a little bit creative as there was someone sitting on the bench on the right and believe it or not someone sitting on the bench behind the statue - I had to move around to get them out of the picture. If I could have just moved further to my right I could have got those colourful posters out of shot and got the lake as my background. I did a quick Flickr search of William Gilbert Rees and see that it can be done. For a second I considered asking them to move for 10 seconds while I took the picture but quickly came to my senses and realised that would not have been appropriate etiquette.
