Summary
[edit]DescriptionStation Road approaching High Street - geograph.org.uk - 1208705.jpg |
English: Station Road approaching High Street Of the two adjoining villages named Great and Little Walsingham, the latter is the one with the larger population. Little Walsingham hosts the earliest Marian shrine, dedicated to the Holy House of Nazareth and built by the lady of the manor, Richeldis de Faverches, traditionally to commemorate her vision of the Blessed Virgin (1061). This shrine and the adjacent Augustinian priory gained fame and wealth from pilgrims and their bequests, until their destruction in 1538/9. |
