English: Floods in Chinchilla, 1921.
Chinchilla is a thriving town in the western Darling downs, 295km NW of Brisbane on the Warrego Highway. Ludwig Leichhardt named the area in 1844 after jinchilla, the local Aboriginal name for cypress pines. Grain-growing is the traditional industry, as well as cattle, sheep, pigs, timber and more recently, grapes, cotton and watermelon. The cactoblastis insect was introduced to eradicate the prickly pear cactus infestation and the Cactoblastis Memorial Hall has been erected at Boonarga 8km east of Chinchilla. (Explore Australia 2003, Penguin Books Australia Ltd., 2002). View of inundated land from the overhead traffic bridge during the 1921-1922 flood. Flooding began December 29, 1921 and remained at a high level for several days. Stories and pictures available in the Courier Mail between 28 December 1921 to 7 January 1922.
