English: Back view of Ipswich residence Garowie, 1920
Garowie, built on White Hill Road, Ipswich, was designed by Ipswich architect Samuel Shenton and built for James Clarke Cribb (1856 - 1926). Garowie is an Aboriginal word meaning Fig Tree Camp. The home was constructed between 1887 and 1888 by contractors Robert Wilson and Company. (See Queensland Times, 19 March 1980, p. 14). J. C. Cribb's younger brother Henry Smart Cribb purchased the house from J. C. Cribb's estate in 1928. The land was transferred to H. S. Cribb on 3 July 1928. The property was sold again after the latter's death on 16 July 1944. During World War II the house was converted to flats. (See Sunday Mail, 17 August 1980, p. 35. See also Queensland Times 17 January 1888, p. 3 and notice of sale in Courier Mail, 14 June 1980). The small child pictured is Marjorie Hargraves, grandaughter of James Clarke Cribb, daughter of Hilda (nee Cribb). (Description supplied with photograph). |
