English: Group of women and girls in the garden, 1860-1870
Group of women and girls in a garden in the 1860s, wearing skirts and dresses which have been puffed out with the use of crinolines (underskirts consisting of concentric hoops made of whalebone, suspended by tape from the waist). The crinoline 'was first introduced in the reign of Queen Elizabeth - very few, if any, fashions in dress deserved such ridicule as the crinoline; yet it became universal, so much so that even dresses for little girls were not considered correct without them' (information taken from: N. Martyn, The look: Australian women in their fashion, 1976). The group are wearing dresses and skirts, with matching buttoned jackets which sit over the top of the skirts. The sleeves of the jackets are long and wide. |
