English: 1950 Riley 2 1/2 litre four door saloon.
The Riley 2 1/2 litre RM series saloons combined a sporting drive and comfortable wood-and-leather interior with an elegant but old-fashioned body. The body was made using the pre-WW2 technique of steel panels over a wooden frame and the fixed roof was covered in fabric - the payoff being a low centre of gravity for good cornering. The 2443cc four cylinder engine, while also a pre-war carryover, had twin camshafts and developed 90 bhp. Riley built their first car in 1898 and became part of William Morris's Nuffield Group in 1938 but remained quite individual in their design. This photograph was taken at New Farm Park in Brisbane. |
