Description

Clayfield received its name from its former importance in the brickmaking industry. There were several clay pits in the area in the late 1800s. The name 'Clayfield' first appears in the Post Office records in 1891 as a section in the Hamilton and Toombul Streets Directory. However the area was settled well before this some time between 1853 and 1858 because of its proximity to the city and sought after elevated breezes. In 1855 the pastoralist, James Sutherland, became the owner of a substantial amount of land in the Toombul Parish, including land in Clayfield.
