ater-sprouts of fruit trees are the aphis eggs re-ferred to. The eggs hatch in the spring at about the time the leaf-budsare opening, and the young lice suck nourishment from thetender growing parts. On badly infested trees the leaves curland the growth is checked. Sometimes in nurseries and young orchards these lice be-come so numerous that treatment is necessary to prevent seriousinjury to the trees. Kerosene emulsion and tobacco tea are thematerials recommended for use in such cases. These may beapplied as a spray or by dipping the infested parts in a Aessel ofthe liquid carried from tree to tree. The latter method willprove most effective for the reason that the curled condition ofthe leaves makes it difficult to reach the lice with a spray.
