Description

Stamp of Spain;1940; definitive stamp of the issue "Isabella and Cid"; Meant is the Spanish Queen Isabella II (1470-1498) ("Digit") and the Spanish national hero "Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar" (1043 – 1099), a Castilian knight and warlord from the village " Vivar del Cid" in the near of Burgos. Rodrigo Díaz is also called „El Campeador“, (literally: "Teacher of the Field", German: "..., der Kämpfer", English: "Master of the Battlefield") which had fighted in the Christian as well as in the Moorish Army. He was married to Jimena Diaz (ca. 1045 - ca. 1116), a relative of King Alfons VI of Castile. After Diaz's death in 1099, his wife let the death corpse of "El Cid" fitted with his armor and let set this figure on his war horse with name "Babieca" in order to bolster the morale of the Christian troops against the Amoravids under Mazdali in 1102 which sieged the town Valencia. After it was called to Alfons VI for his support, his former wife fled to Burgos after the Muslim conquest of Valencia in 1102.; This scene from the time of the "Reconquista" with the death corpse of "El Cid" on the back of his horse is depicted on the stamp after a mediaval epic poem from the 12th century (of an unknown author). Some later was published the "Mocedades de Rodrigo" in which was included this poem. In the 17th century, for instance, the Spanish writer Gullén de Castro, overtake this story and wrote a play called "Les Mocedades del Cid" and which was overtaken by the French Pierre Corneille, which built in this story in one of his famous tragicomedies.; It was a great milestone on the way from the mediaval Spain knight to the the national hero of the 20th century Spain.; There are many artworks in Spain showing "El Cid", even a Puccini attended to "El Cid" one of his musical artworks.; "El Cid" means literally "The Lord".; Depicted on the stamp is a painting by Marceliano Santamaría Sedano (1866-!952) showing this scene., stamp postmarked without signature line by the printery
