Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A military car parked beside a sentry-box built of sandbags in a partly destroyed village. Several signs indicate a gas-alarm point is situated at the sentry station. As the war progressed, motor vehicles were increasingly used by senior staff, although they still wore their cavalry breeches.

The ruined half-timbered building in this photograph was probably medieval in origin. While many of the medieval churches were repaired or reconstructed, many fine examples of French vernacular architecture were destroyed. This was important as it was a part of the national and local identity which was permanently lost.
