| Description |
English: St. Swithin's Church, Sproatley, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Little is known about the medieval church which was built in the early part of the 12th century and dedicated to St. Swithin by the early 13th century. Its steeple was recorded in 1552 and the chancel was rethatched in the 1660s and repaired in 1670. In general the building seems to have been poorly maintained and one of the curates, Joseph Hatfield, had the small 'much decayed' building demolished in December 1819 and the new one built which was completed in 1820. The new church was apparently dedicated to All Saints but by 1840 it seems once again to have become known as St. Swithin's. Most of it was taken down and rebuilt yet again in 1885-86. |
