Description
English: St Swithin's church - bench end. St Swithin's church is very small, with its round tower (rebuilt in 1849) being the narrowest in England; the church is extensively restored. Medieval survivals are a couple of benches and bench ends with (restored) animal carvings > 817167 ; the bench next to the south doorway carries the date 1531; it and has carvings depicting shields and initials, and the symbols of the wounds of Christ > 817174. The tomb chest of Honor Bacon who, in 1591, died on the morning of her wedding day, is located in the southeastern corner of the sanctuary > 817177. The east window, dating from the early 19th century, is by William Morris & Co > 817165. The church is open every day.
