Summary

[edit]
Description Carved marble lectern in St Mary's Church, in Nun Monkton, North Yorkshire, England. This is a 12th or 13th-century abbey church, which was renovated in 1873 after designs by architect John Wilson Walton. The pulpit and the reredos (and possibly some other sculptural work) were carved by Robert Beall of Newcastle, in 1873. Showing the carved head of a woman, hidden on the south side of the lectern. She may represent a saint, but the sculptor has used a real woman as the model.
