St Mary's church - churchyard
Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt Mary's church - churchyard - geograph.org.uk - 1463732.jpg |
English: St Mary's church - churchyard. Two unusual headstones stand beside the path leading to the south porch of the church. They commemorate George > 1463747 - died 1876, and Ann Basey > 1463740 - died 1868, depicting them surrounded by their flocks of geese and turkeys, both of which were still bred in great quantities at that time. Droves of turkeys and geese were walked all the way to London, accompanied by skilled men and women who ensured that the animals reached their destiny in good condition. An image of Ann Basey and her geese has been incorporated into the village sign > 1464859. See > 1463706 for a view of the church. |
