English: The nearby St James Church was designed by the architect to the Clothworkers company,, FW Porter. Nearby the Clothworkers armshouses. THe Worshipful Company of Clothworkers was incorporated in 1528, following an amalgamation of the Fullers' and Shearmen's companies. By the time of the above building, cloth making had long left London and the role, as today, had become predominantly charitable.
The inscription reads ERECTed 1884 By the Worshipful Company of Clothworkers. Charles James Orton Esq. Master The stone at the top of the building gives the date as 1883. Messrs Wagstaff & Warman architects Thomas Wontnersmith & Son Builders More about Thomas Wontnersmith (sic) here who was a Freeman of the City of London and liveryman of the worshipful company of feltmakers.
